There’s not much wrong with the five songs (plus an intro) here; full throttle
black metal, vocals alternating between traditional high-pitched screeches and
lower growls, and jackhammer drumming meant to pummel your soul into the netherworld.

The Canis Lupus, better known as "Wolf", has a new worshipper. Wolfgate, which praises
the elegant and fierce creature through their band name, demo title and artwork, is just as well
an entity to watch out for.

Weaving a chilling aura of grand mystique is the stunning keyboard work,
offering a dark beauty through the otherwise super intensive wall of atmospheric sound.

It’s hard to miss the moments of sublimity, when the enormous
melodic sweeps tangle with the harshness of the guitars and rolling
thunder of the drums and really snag at the imagination.
Hirewire Daze
(Nov/Dec issue) - November 23, 2008, Knitting Factory concert
When Wolfgate took the stage, they nearly blew the
roof off the venue with their imaginative brand of progressive black
metal. While bands like Emporer
and even Opeth
come to mind, Wolfgate demostrate enough imagination
in their music to really stand out on their own. One of the very best
of the local unsigned bands, it won't be long before that status changes.
Performing songs from their just released EP Howling
Lament, expect to hear very great things from Wolfgate
in the future. Dare to enter and prepare to be transfixed by their
brutal symphonies.

The demo around 32 minutes is highly recommended for those that
like black melodic metal. In Wolfgate you will find a band of quality
and with new ideas, very intense and very dark atmospheres.

Judged on its own merits 'Howling Lament' can be considered quite
an astonishing demo achievement.
